Bring your question.
Bring your history.

A first visit is a chance to explain what you want help with and hear how the person treating you thinks about it.

A clinician is a doctor, nurse or other health professional who assesses or treats you.

A request for care and a request for a product differ.

Useful opening

Explain the problem.

Describe what bothers you, what it changes in your day and which things you have tried so far.

Leaves gaps

Only name an injection.

Add the reason behind the request. Make space to ask about other ways to address it.

Leave the visit with a reason for the plan, including a reason if the answer is no.

Put your notes together.

Ask which tests your visit needs.

As of September 2026, federal rules do not impose a general blood-test requirement before every prescription.

State rules or the care you need may still require tests.

Ask which rules and tests apply to your visit. Ask what each test would help the clinician decide.

Guidance from medical licensing boards says the doctor must arrange any tests needed to assess you properly.

The doctor can perform the tests, arrange them elsewhere or send you to someone who can do them.
